How to Winterize a Misting System: The Gulf Coast Myths We Bust Every Fall

Every year around this time, the phone starts ringing with the same question, worded about a dozen different ways: do I really need to winterize my misting system down here? It's September 2026, we're still running mist over patios from Milton to Destin, and folks are already thinking ahead to the first cool snap. Good — that's the right time to think about it, before the weather makes the decision for you. But before I walk you through how we actually do it, I want to knock down three myths we hear constantly, because they're the reason we replace more pumps and nozzles in February than we do in July.

MYTH #1: IT DOESN'T FREEZE ON THE GULF COAST, SO I DON'T HAVE TO WINTERIZE

I've been doing this long enough to have heard this one a hundred times, usually from someone standing on a patio in December wearing shorts. And I get it — a Northwest Florida winter is a joke compared to what our customers up in Tennessee or North Georgia deal with. But here's what we actually see in the field: it only takes one night. One hard freeze in January, one line full of standing water tucked up under a pergola beam where the sun never hits it, and you've got a split nylon tube or a cracked fitting you won't discover until you fire the system up in April and it starts raining sideways on your grill.

Water expands when it freezes. It doesn't care that the daytime high was 68. And on the Gulf Coast we get something arguably worse than a steady deep freeze — we get freeze-thaw cycles. Down to 28 overnight, back up to 60 by lunch, over and over. That repeated expansion and contraction is brutal on slip lock fittings, pump heads, and filter housings. The systems we see fail down here almost never fail from a single catastrophic freeze. They fail from a dozen small ones.

MYTH #2: I'LL JUST TURN OFF THE WATER AND CALL IT DONE

This is the most common one, and it's the most understandable — it feels like it should be enough. Shut the valve, walk away. The problem is that shutting off the supply doesn't remove the water that's already sitting in the pump, the filter canister, the tubing, and the nozzle bodies. High-pressure systems in particular hold a surprising amount of water in the pump head and manifold, and that's the most expensive part of your whole setup.

The other issue nobody thinks about is stagnation. Water sitting in a line for four or five months doesn't just sit there — it grows things, and it drops out mineral scale. We've pulled apart systems in the spring where every single nozzle was crusted shut and the tubing had gone cloudy inside. The homeowner didn't have a freeze problem. They had a sitting-water problem. Draining is as much about what you'll deal with next spring as it is about protecting against ice.

MYTH #3: WINTERIZING IS A BIG COMPLICATED JOB I NEED TO HIRE OUT

Honestly? For a typical residential patio or pergola system, it's a 30-minute job with no special tools. Commercial installs with multiple zones, booster pumps, and long runs are a different animal, and we're happy to handle those. But if you've got a home system, you can absolutely do this yourself. Here's the way our crew does it.

HOW WE ACTUALLY WINTERIZE A MISTING SYSTEM

First, cut the power to the pump at the breaker or unplug it. Never work on a high-pressure pump with it energized — these units can cycle on automatically if there's a pressure drop.

Second, shut off the water supply at the source, not just at the pump inlet. Then open the system and let it relieve pressure. On a lot of setups there's a drain or bleed valve at the pump; if yours has one, open it and let the pump head and filter housing empty out.

Third, drain the lines. The easiest method on most patio installs is to disconnect the tubing at the lowest point and let gravity do the work, then walk the line and lift sections to push the remaining water out. If you have access to compressed air at low pressure — and I mean low, feathered in gently — you can blow the lines clear, but go easy. Nylon tubing and slip lock fittings don't need much persuasion, and too much air pressure will pop a fitting right off.

Fourth, pull your filters. Take the cartridge out of the filter housing, dump the water, and either replace the cartridge now or set it aside dry. A wet filter cartridge sitting all winter is a freeze risk and a science experiment. This is also a good moment to look at your filtration and replacement parts and order what you'll need for spring startup while you're thinking about it.

Fifth, deal with the nozzles. We recommend removing them and soaking them in a descaling solution or white vinegar, then rinsing, drying, and storing them in a labeled bag. If you leave them in the line, at minimum make sure the orifices are clear of standing water. Plug or cap the open nozzle ports so bugs, dirt, and wasps don't move in — I've cleaned mud daubers out of more misting lines than I care to count.

Sixth, protect the pump. If it's a portable or bracket-mounted unit, bring it inside — a garage, a shed, anywhere it won't freeze. If it's permanently plumbed in, drain it thoroughly and wrap it with insulation or a pump cover. Some folks add a small amount of RV-grade antifreeze to the pump head; if you go that route, be sure to flush it completely in the spring.

Finally, take pictures. Sounds silly, but photographing your zone layout and nozzle spacing before you break anything down saves a lot of guesswork six months later.

WHAT ABOUT SYSTEMS THAT RUN YEAR-ROUND?

Not every system gets put to bed. Plenty of our odor control and dust suppression customers at transfer stations, landfills, and recycling facilities run through winter because odor and dust don't take a season off. Same with greenhouse humidification and grow room applications. For those, winterizing looks different — it's about heat tracing, insulating exposed runs, protecting the pump enclosure, and building in freeze protection controls rather than shutting down. We design those in from the start, and if you're running a year-round industrial or agricultural setup and you're not sure your freeze protection is adequate, that's a conversation worth having before December.

One more note on the safety side. OSHA's guidance on cold stress is a good reminder that the same freeze conditions threatening your equipment are also a hazard for anyone working outside on it.
